March 1, 2023:

Did you know that women make up 90% of the global nursing workforce? In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, GAIA plans to elevate the voices of nurses we work with and admire throughout the month.

“Nurses are the backbone of any health system." Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General

GAIA has been investing in Malawi’s nursing workforce since 2005, supporting 751 nursing scholars and 224 fellows to date. Scholarships increase the number of qualified nurses entering the workforce and fellowships bridge critical staffing gaps at public health facilities, increasing access and quality of care for vulnerable communities.

March 8, 2023:

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, GAIA shines a spotlight on the importance of women mentors and educators. Martha Gasten Sifoliano is one of seven Clinical Mentors hired with GAIA support to help nursing students develop skills and prepare for the transition to practice.

March 17, 2023:

GAIA’s success wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of so many incredible women. Let’s work together to support and uplift the next generation of women leaders.Happy #WomensHistoryMonth!

March 23, 2023:

During this #WomensHistoryMonth, we highlight education as a powerful tool to improve gender equity and transform the lives of women and girls. GAIA aligns our Nursing Scholars Program with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 for Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and quality education for all, including "equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university" by 2030. To date, 76% of GAIA Nursing Scholarships have been awarded to socioeconomically disadvantaged young women.

March 31, 2023:

Women are estimated to represent 67% of the global health and care workforce, yet they hold only 25% of health and care leadership roles.  At GAIA, nearly 70% of our staff are women and two thirds of the leadership team are female. To date, 76% of the nursing scholarships we award go to socioeconomically disadvantaged young women and 85% of deployed scholars who have held leadership positions are female. The GAIA team is committed to investing in women leaders now and in the future!
