Global Health Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) has launched mobile clinic services in Nsanje District.

The mobile clinics will be helping people in five areas of the district on different days, offering all services that a basic clinic is expected to offer in Malawi.

Speaking during the launch, GAIA Board Chairperson Dorothy Zimba said their mission was to bring health facilities to vulnerable people and in hard-to-reach areas with no access to health services.

She said, in areas they will be operating the mobile clinics, people were dying along the way to the nearest hospital because it was far.

“People were delivering on the way to the hospital. Therefore, our vision is to make sure that those people are taken care of,” she said.

Traditional Authority Tengani thanked Gaia for the services, saying people from Nthondo Area, for example, were covering 27 kilometres to access basic health services.

The traditional leader said while mobile clinics were a good development, they would not be available on daily basis, such that there was a need for the government to consider establishing a permanent health post.

“We would like to request the government to construct a health centre within the area so that people can have basic health services within reach all the time,” he said.

Guest of Honour at the event was Ministry of Health’s Director of the Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood Ethel Kapyepye, who said the development was the right step.

“The government has plans to ensure that everyone has access to health services and one of the strategies is the mobile clinics, as we have seen today, which we do in partnership with other organisations,” she said.

Apart from Nsanje, GAIA operates mobile clinics in Phalombe, Mulanje, and Mangochi districts.
